Friendly Bacteria To The Rescue

| December 6th, 2011 | No Comments »

Research indicates that supplementing with “friendly bacteria” (probiotics) is probably more important than taking a multivitamin. This is due to the profound role gut bacteria play in your health. The bacteria in your gut influence countless aspects of your health outside of your digestive tract, including your weight, insulin sensitivity, mood and risk of numerous chronic diseases. Medical research reveals that 80% of our immune function is centered in our bowels.

I’ve posted below, a summary of the recent article titled,  If You’re Tired or Constipated, This “Unusual Treatment” May Help from Dr. Mercola’s website.

The bacteria in your gut influence countless aspects of your health outside of your digestive tract, including your weight, insulin sensitivity, mood and risk of numerous chronic diseases.

New research provides further evidence that your gut bacteria play a role in multiple sclerosis, potentially triggering autoimmune nerve damage and influencing your immune system’s inflammatory response.

Fecal transplants, in which donor feces from a healthy person are transplanted into a patient, are showing remarkable results in treating a wide range of health conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, Clostridium difficile infection and possibly even metabolic syndrome.

Maintaining a healthy environment in your gut, by eating unpasteurized fermented foods and/or taking a high-quality probiotic supplement, along with avoiding antibiotics, will support your overall health and well-being.

Candida: Need It or Not?

| December 30th, 2010 | No Comments »

Candida is a naturally occurring yeast found in every human being on Earth. It is found mainly in our intestines and it serves a purpose vital to our health when it’s under control.

But when Candida gets out of control, it can overtake us in many ways and cause short and long term health problems. Using antibiotics can trigger an out of control Candida infestation, as can eating too much sugary or starchy food, which is very common during the holidays.

Some signs of a systemic Candida infestation can include:

  • Feeling tired after eating.
  • Feeling uncharacteristically angry or even depressed – especially after eating.
  • Craving carbs and sugars
  • Oral Thrush.
  • Fungal skin infections.
  • Vaginal infections and drainage.
  • Jock itch. Athlete’s foot.
  • Excess mucous in the nose, throat or lungs.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Anal itching.
  • Feeling “spaced out” (Brain fog or short term memory loss).
  • Bloating and flatulence after eating

While any one symptom does not necessarily mean you have a Candida overgrowth, several together may indicate so. If you suspect you are having an issue with Candida, you should start following a diet that will starve the Candida yeasts. Taking supplements that are geared toward defeating Candida can be very helpful, too. Discuss the symptoms with a doctor who uses natural medicine for further direction.

TEST AT HOME FOR CANDIDA: When you awake in the morning, before you put anything into your mouth, work up some saliva and spit it into a clear glass of water. Within 1-30 minutes, look in the glass. If there are strings coming down from your saliva, or if the water turned cloudy, or if your saliva sank to the bottom, you may have candida overgrowth.

Healthy saliva will simply float on the top.

Candida overgrowth begins in the colon. Over time, as the fungal yeast multiplies it begins to migrate through the digestive tract, moving up into the small intestine, then the stomach (signs can be bloating and indigestion), up the esophagus and into the mouth. If it becomes strongly entrenched there you can see a white film on your tongue and inside your cheeks. Once it has moved up to the mouth and you spit into a glass of water the yeast will sink because it is heavier than water. If there is no yeast it will float on top.

Colon hydrotherapy assists in getting rid of Candida yeast. How can you tell if your colon needs cleansing? Several signs indicate a need for cleaning your colon.

If you:

  • are constipated on a regular basis
  • get diarrhea or loose/watery bowel movements
  • have recurring vaginal yeast infections or yeast rashes
  • eat more junk food than healthy food
  • get sick often
  • have a metallic taste in your mouth
  • have halitosis (bad breath)
  • have excessive weight gain or bloating
  • have chronic headaches or tiredness
  • have gas, heartburn and flatulence
  • get skin rashes

Candida Elimination Dietary Guidelines

Avoid or limit:

  • Sugar, refined and simple sugars
  • Wheat and rye
  • Milk and cheese
  • Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages
  • Potatoes
  • Honey
  • Mushrooms
  • Vinegars
The following foods are your best choices when on a Candida diet. Note, this diet may lead to loss of weight.

  • Fish, poultry, and lean red meat
  • Most vegetables – limit the amount of squashes, such as pumpkin
  • Brown rice
  • Eggs
  • Seeds and all nuts, except cashews and peanuts
  • Beans and lentils
  • Organic milks, but modify the amount of milk from cows
  • Amaranth, kamut, quinoa, buckwheat, oats, and spelt

Ten Reasons To Get A Colonic

| November 1st, 2010 | No Comments »

  1. Internal poisons can cause wrinkles, blemishes, psoriasis, eczema and liver spots.
  2. Impacted waste disturbs mental function and hastens dementia.
  3. A toxic colon can cause acidosis, bloating and yeast infections.
  4. Decreased bowel activity can cause foul breath and bad teeth.
  5. An unhealthy colon can be related to arthritis and joint pain.
  6. A congested lower bowel can cause back pain, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and diverticulitis.
  7. An inactive colon can cause weight gain and slow weight loss.
  8. Toxins, such as phenol, ammonia, indol, scatole, cresol, cadaverin, botulin, butyric acid, neurin, sepsin, and other highly active poisons, found in a low functioning colon, can increase the risk of cancer by at least 75%.
  9. Waste in the colon putrefies, creates gas, and slows elimination.
  10. A toxic bowel can weaken and cause stress to the heart.

Got Yeast?

| September 3rd, 2010 | No Comments »
Yeasts are single-celled organisms present in all of us, but when they start multiplying rapidly, look out. The yeast usually responsible for unhealthy effects is called Candida albicans. It can proliferate out of control, leading to yeast overdrive in various places in the body—especially when the body’s immune system is imbalanced. http://www.customprobiotics.com/_images/intestinal-microflora-410.jpg

You can find yeast imbalance in the mouth, the esophagus, the gut, the genitourinary area and other places. Here’s what happens. Yeast crowds out normal gut flora and changes the composition of gut enzymes and diminishes the gut’s ability to properly absorb nutrients.

Likewise, yeast releases toxins that are then absorbed through the gut, leading to unhealth. Yeasts can also cause allergic responses similar to hay fever allergies—caused by a special class of antibodies called IgE antibodies.

Yeast imbalance isn’t comfortable, either. It can lead to fatigue, irritability, gut cramping and bloating, sore/itchy throat, genitourinary unhealth and much more.

Need to balance your system—yeast-wise? Here are some suggestions:

Do:
Support your immune system
Eat a diet of healthy proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and probiotics
Avoid sugars and other unhealthy carbs
Avoid unnecessary medicines, especially broad-spectrum antibiotics and steroids
Manage stress
Maintain hormonal balance
Avoid unnecessary surgeries

Don’t:
Eat a lot of sugary, high-carb foods
Stress yourself or your immune system
Overuse antibiotics, or avoid altogether!
Overuse steroids, or avoid altogether!
Deplete your enzyme levels or other important nutrients

Additionally, be sure to maintain balanced gut flora, a healthy digestive tract and a balanced immune system. All of these can go a long way in creating the yeast balance necessary for health.
